My younger brother Devon (8 years old--our relationship is very similar to that of the Eggers brothers in A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius except for the fact that both of our parents are still alive) and I created a list of over twenty things to do in few days I am home. They include things like mini-golfing, eating cherries, and playing ping-pong (which I found out to be impossible because our ping-pong table rotted after our basement flooded earlier this Spring).
Also on the list- baking.
Naturally, because chocolate pecan pies are my favorite kind of pies, we decided to bake a chocolate pecan pie. We went to the grocery store to pick up supplies and ingredients. Pecans, pie crust, margarine, vanilla extract, eggs, sugar, salt, cocoa powder (unsweetened). Arriving home and ready to get started, I realized I forgot to get corn syrup. Because the ingredients called for a cup of it, I decided it was an integral part of the pie and forced myself to make a second trip to pick it up.
The instructions seemed easy enough that even though it would be my first time baking a pie, I felt confident (at least on the outside-inside I was actually quite worried failure would be inevitable). There were a few struggles--I unknowingly skipped over some steps due to stupidity, and the (gas) oven would not heat continuously. So, instead of the expected 55 minute bake time, it took almost two hours (with me restarting the fire every so often and finally having to guess when the pie was finished just by how it looked). Finally, I took it out (a struggle in itself due to the absence of mitts) and put it in the fridge to cool overnight.
The result:

What came out of the oven was pure deliciousness, a pie delivered straight from the Greek gods. The aroma rising from the pie was as sweet as Medea's revenge (mediocre analogy offered by Jie). Success.
Wouldn't you like to taste a slice of my pie?
Yummy.
Responses from tasters
Jie: "Delicious. Best pie I've ever had. Hands down."
Yi: "Sweet."
Devon: "This is the best thing I have ever tasted!"
omg that looks amazing. gang, we HAVE to bake together when we get back to yale. meanwhile, i will live vicariously through your exploits, esp. when i'm in japan ovenless and craving baked goods.
ReplyDeletealso, this blog is the most brilliant idea ever. i've not-so-subtly tried to turn my light fellowship blog into a food blog--i figured as long as i include a few other details about japan, it should be okay, right? haha anyway, i want constant updates on this blog! since it will join the roster of food blogs (yes this one counts) that i check daily.
Hee-Sun, do you want to join the food blog?
